Gaining Experience Through Volunteering

Sam carves out some time off campus to volunteer at Freestore Foodbank’s Liberty Street Market.

The start of a new school year often means new classes, new people and new opportunities. It can also bring about a new chance to help others.

Take Sam, for example. He’s a biology student from the University of Cincinnati who volunteers at Freestore Foodbank’s Liberty Street Market to fulfill a service component with the university. In addition to meeting volunteer requirements, he also appreciates how meaningful it feels to make a difference.

Sam says, hands down, the best part of volunteering is the people he interacts with.

“I’ve been in pretty much all the positions so far, and I feel like no matter what, each time, people are nice,” he says. “People are funny. It’s just nice interacting with folks.”

Of all the places Sam could have donated his volunteer hours to, he chose Freestore Foodbank. Why? Because food is a fundamental need.

“Most volunteering things are for a good cause, like picking up trash around the city,” he explains. “But for me specifically, I like food stuff. I think it’s really important. People need it to live every day.”

Volunteers like Sam — and generous donors like you — help keep our markets stocked and our distributions rolling. If you’d like to join our volunteer team, visit freestorefoodbank.org/volunteers for more information. Thank you!
