“It Helps a Lot”

Alice loves to cook. But when she started to lose her eyesight, it became difficult for her to get out for groceries — and even harder to live alone.

Thankfully, she was able to move in with her son Richard last year. Richard volunteers at Freestore Foodbank’s Liberty Street Market every Monday, which helps him meet the criteria to qualify for SNAP benefits. He receives some food assistance each month, but Alice says that with prices continuing to go up, it isn’t enough to feed one person, much less both of them.

Alice and Richard are grateful they can visit the Liberty Street Market twice a month. The market is a choice pantry designed like a grocery store, where neighbors can shop around and choose the foods that best fit their needs. Alice especially loves the produce and the meat they find here.

“The produce is wonderful,” she says. “I’m going to make a big pot of vegetable soup!”

Richard has been volunteering since August 2022, and spends his time keeping the shelves stocked with groceries. He says he always feels good about coming in to help other families in need.

“It helps a lot,” Alice says. “We have very little food, and I use all of it that we get.”

Your gifts help provide nourishing food to neighbors like Alice and Richard. Thank you for giving so generously!
