1) High-Five: Hunger Walk Wrap-Up
A big high-five to everyone who helped to make the 11th Annual Hunger Walk & 5K Run a success! This year, a record 5,310 walkers/runners participated in the event on Memorial Day. We truly appreciate the 62 volunteers who contributed approximately 300 hours over the course of three-days to help make the event go as smoothly as possible. Our volunteers worked alongside staff in many capacities from weekend packet pick-up, pre-day event setup, to day-of event assignments to ensure this year’s event was a huge success!

2a) Appalachian Festival Food Drive
This year the Freestore Foodbank partnered with the Appalachian Community Development Association (ACDA) at their annual Appalachian May Fest May 9- 11. With the help of 37 volunteers, we collected enough food and monetary donations to provide 6,000 meals to our neighbors who need our help. The proceeds from this event support our Customer Connection Center. Thank you to all of our volunteers who made this collaboration a success.

2b) Check-Out Power Pack
Our Check-Out campaigns play an integral part with maintaining the programs provided by the Freestore Foodbank. Check-Out Power Pack supports our weekend feeding program for kids during the school year. Over the course of six weeks this past spring, Check-Out Power Pack volunteers installed and maintained placards at 60 Kroger stores in Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Indiana. This year’s campaign will help to provide 16,200 Power Packs for children in need. All our thanks to the volunteers who contributed their time to this Check Out campaign.

3) Open Season: Giving Fields Spring has sprung and we’re looking for plenty of volunteers to come play in the dirt with us at our community farm, the Giving Fields. Located in Melbourne, Kentucky, the farm provides fresh fruits and vegetables for our neighbors in need in Northern Kentucky. Last season, more than 70 groups generously donated their time at the Giving Fields, helping with projects such as weeding, planting, bed-building and harvesting. We already have a few groups on our calendar to help open the farm this month. “High-harvest time is July, “explains Molly Jordan, Giving Fields Farm Manager.  “The fruit trees planted several years ago will be ready to yield a small crop, as will the planted asparagus and blueberry vines.” New this year, there will be a small organic section of the farm, where the Molly will plant kale, cabbage, broccoli and peppers – all produce that can thrive without the use of herbicides, fungicides or pesticides. The long-term plan is for the entire farm to transition to organic over the next three years. For individual or group scheduling, please contact Amy Knoche at [email protected] or 513-482-4520.

4) Inclement Weather, Giving Fields:
If an individual or group is scheduled to volunteer at the Giving Fields and we experience inclement weather, please call our volunteer line at 513-482-7550 for updates on potential cancellations or delays. Team Leaders will also be notified by the farm manager, Molly Jordan. Safety is our number one priority for our volunteers.

5) Upcoming Events/Volunteer Opportunities:

  •  Hogs vs. Hunger: Biker Nights (Ongoing)
    We are currently recruiting 4-10 volunteers to assist at Biker Nights on Wednesday and Thursday evenings between the hours of 5pm-10pm (can be split into 2 hour shifts) at three Quaker Steak and Lube locations in Cincinnati and Kentucky, Milford (Wednesdays; 5p-9p); Colerain and Florence, KY(Thursdays; 6p-10p). Volunteers will assist with selling t-shirts and raffle tickets leading up to the 4th Annual Hogs vs. Hunger raffle. We will be raffling off three Harley Davidson bikes (1 at each location) in mid-October. To register for this event, please contact Tawanda Rollins at [email protected] or 513-482-7557.
  • 20th Annual Rubber Duck Regatta Kickoff (Washington Park; July 14; 5pm-7pm)
    A family friendly event will help kickoff “Duck Season” this year. We are still finalizing volunteer needs for this event and will have more information soon. Please contact Tawanda Rollins at [email protected] or 513-482-7557 for more information.
  • Fourth Annual Hogs vs Hunger (July 19)
    Volunteers are needed for event setup and breakdown, rider registration, raffle ticket sales and other assignments. For more detailed information, please contact Tawanda Rollins at [email protected] or (513) 482-7557. All proceeds from this event support the Freestore Foodbank’s Customer Connection Center.
  • Check-Out Duck – (July 15-August 30)
    Volunteers will install, maintain, and uninstall placards and tear tabs at their adopted Kroger store(s) for the duration of the campaign. One or two visits to the assigned store(s) each week for maintenance is required. On the last day of the campaign, volunteers will remove the placards and return any unused supplies to our Central Parkway location. Last year, Check-Out Duck raised over $100,000 to support the Freestore Foodbank’s efforts.

7) FeedingWorks-Transformational Teambuilding

The Freestore Foodbank has launched a new social enterprise. FeedingWorks is geared toward work groups looking to strengthen their teams.

  • 3-4 hour high energy session
  • Teams work together to make an immediate difference on hunger in Greater Cincinnati
  • The session will help to provide insight on how the team is working together more effectively;  including strengths and blind spots
  • Improve communication, encouragement and conflict management skills
  • Customized to meet your team’s specific needs
  • Combines leadership and team development
  • Furthers the mission of Freestore Foodbank by feeding hungry children in the community
