September is Hunger Action Month, and we’re asking all Americans to take action to fight domestic hunger all month long. Throughout Hunger Action Month, Freestore Foodbank, along with Feeding America’s nationwide network of more than 200 food banks, invite Americans to help end hunger through the “30 Ways in 30 Days” campaign. Download your printable calendar here.
Whether it’s by advocating and raising awareness, making donations, or volunteering, You can find the way that’s right for you to make a difference during Hunger Action Month. Start by taking a “My Way” Pledge, designating your primary way to help. You can choose from five broad WAYS categories, including Advocate, Organize, Experience, Donate, and Volunteer.
Take the Pledge Today!
The goal of Hunger Action Month is to mobilize the public to act on behalf of Freestore Foodbank and the Feeding America network of food banks. Based on statistics from the United States Department of Agriculture, we know that one in six Americans struggles with hunger each year. One out of every six people, right here in our own country. How many people work at your office? How many students are in your classroom? Hunger Action Month is our opportunity to create a movement throughout September that has a real and lasting impact on our efforts to feed more Americans than ever before.
Check out these local events and starting taking action today!

Spoon Drive at Findlay Market
Support Cincinnati’s Findlay Market located in historic Over-the-Rhine and Hunger Action Month this weekend from 8am – 2pm!
Take a moment to visit the market, support local farmers and vendors, and DONATE YOUR OLD SPOONS! While providing emergency food at the Freestore Foodbank’s Customer Connection Center, we work to determine the root causes of poverty and food insecurity, and this allows us to offer services aimed at creating self-reliance.
We also notice needs that may not first come to your mind. For instance, a dining set. When a family moves into their first home, after staying in shelters, forks, spoons and knives are not at the top of their priority list, but they are much needed items.
The Freestore Foodbank will have a Spoon Collection table in the outdoor market, with information about our programs and our volunteer opportunities! We will happily accept any dining table options, like: Spoons, Forks, Knives, Plastic Cups, Plastic Plates, Plastic Bowls, Pots and Pans, Serving spoons, Plastic storage containers, and cooking utensils.
Bring your spoons or just stop by for a free sticker and information about Hunger Action Month!

Panerathon 5k Walk/Run
In response to the increase in childhood hunger, Panera is asking the Cincinnati community to participate in the Panerathon 4-mile run and 2-mile walk/run in Hyde Park Plaza, where all proceeds will benefit the Freestore Foodbank’s Power Pack program.
Thousands of children are hungry, just around the corner from where you are now. Their minds and bodies are suffering and they’re struggling to learn, to laugh, to play and to just enjoy being a kid. Children are especially vulnerable to issues of hunger and Panera wants to make sure that they aren’t deprived of something that we all take for granted—food.
By participating in Panerathon you can help provide funding so that the Freestore Foodbank’s Power Pack program can provide hungry children with a bag of nutritious, kid friendly, easy to prepare food items that they will take home with them. (Our Feeding America Back Pack program was renamed by the kids in Cincinnati to Power Pack)
Please join us at Hyde Park Plaza on September 19, 2010. The Race starts at 9am and registration opens at 7:30am or Register online. Everyone is welcome, including kids, strollers and pets! Medals and gift cards will be awarded to the top three finishers. A finish-line celebration features fresh bagels, pastries and sandwiches from Panera Bread, plus fun games for the whole family.
Please join us at Panerathon this year and help us feed hungry children in our community.
