Honoring the MLK Day of Service with Power Pack-a-Thon
At the Freestore Foodbank, we believe in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Junior’s legacy through service. That’s why we created Power Pack-a-Thon, an annual event geared toward helping kids in need in our community.
At 12:30 p.m. on Monday, January 20, a great group of volunteers will join us on Fountain Square to participate in the Sixth Annual Power Pack-a-Thon event. Participants will help us prepare Power Packs, which are packs of nutritious food that are given to grade school students on Fridays to ensure they have something to eat over the weekend.
Support from our Friends
To help kick-off Power Pack-a-Thon, our friends with Panera Bread will present the Freestore Foodbank with a check to support the Power Pack program. The donation is made possible by Panera’s 2013 Operation DoughNation® campaign. Panera Bread customers supported the fight against hunger by way of cash donation boxes located at the registers of the 15 bakery-cafes in Hamilton and Clermont Counties and Northern Kentucky.
Dr. King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'” Power Pack-a-Thon is the Freestore Foodbank’s response to President Barack Obama’s call to transform Martin Luther King Day into a national day of community service. In its sixth year, the event has helped hundreds of volunteers in Cincinnati honor Martin Luther King Day while feeding thousands of Tri-State children.
How You Can Help
While all Power Pack-a-Thon volunteer slots are already filled, you can still honor Dr. King and support kids in need in our community by donating to the Power Pack program.
**In the event of inclement weather, Power Pack-a-Thon will move to the Freestore Foodbank’s Mayerson Distribution Center located at 1250 Tennessee Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45229.
