Hunger is a major concern for the homeless population.
• In the U.S., more than 3.5 million people experience homelessness each year.
• 35% of the homeless population is families with children, which is the fastest growing segment of the homeless population.
• 25% of the homeless are children and 45% of children who are homeless are 5 or younger.
The major factors for homelessness are lack of affordable housing, poverty, unemployment, mental illness and substance abuse. Single men comprise 49% of the homeless population and single women account for 16%
How does the Freestore Foodbank help?
The Freestore Foodbank provides emergency food assistance to the homeless and aims to create stability by providing clinical exams, housing assistance, job training, mental health and substance abuse care. Our SSI Homeless program allows homeless persons to be better prepared
to apply for Social Security Benefits.
